With temperatures rising earlier than usual this year, lawn diseases are making an unexpected early appearance. These diseases thrive in hot, humid, and moist conditions, particularly during nights when temperatures stay in the low-to-mid 70s. Two common culprits, brown patch (Rhizoctonia) and dollar spot (Clarireedia), are especially active under these conditions.

It wouldn’t be spring if we didn’t announce our April Lawn of the Month winners. With over 110 submissions this month, it was one of the hardest decisions to choose winners as every single home and lawn submitted blew our minds with beauty! Remember, each month is another opportunity to submit your home as a potential winner and to show off its beauty. A $75 credit towards a future application doesn’t hurt either .

Seeing Local Lawns Spring to Life

There is nothing quite like the sights, sounds and smells of spring, from the beautiful flowers in bloom, honeysuckle hanging in the trees and the smell of fresh cut grass on beautiful tall fescue lawns. Maybe we are a little biased at Virginia Green, but this is certainly our favorite season of the year. This season has gotten off to a great start and ample rain, sunshine and warm days have produced gorgeous lawns and landscapes.

The heat is on and my lawn is showing it – yours probably is too. Here in Central Virginia, we live in a transition zone, which means it gets really cold in the winter and extremely hot in the summer, which can (and usually does) equate to stressed turf. Although we can’t really do anything about Virginia weather, there are some steps we can take to help our grass handle the heat.

The three tips below should help your lawn survive the hot weather.

Spring is officially here and lawns are thriving during National Lawn Care Month

Spring is officially here! The warm weather of the past two weeks is a vast improvement over the rainy and cloudy conditions of the past three winter months. We are delighted to see Virginia Green customers outside, mowing their lawns for the first time and working on their landscapes. Being outside on a beautiful Virginia Green lawn with flowers blooming, birds chirping, and tree’s leafing out remains something special.

This year, with spring's delayed arrival, our eagerness to get started has only grown. Our Service Leaders are busy watching the grass turn a lush green, and we're seeing our customers begin to spend more time outside. It's a busy season for us, and we're ready to ensure everyone's lawns are top-notch.

So far, 2024’s winter weather has been cooperative despite excessive rain. The good news is all the products our Virginia Green service leaders apply need to be watered into the soil, so this eliminates a step for our homeowners. We have been outside working when we can, with Virginia Green Service Leaders pulling soil samples, sending these to Waypoint Labs in Memphis, and getting the results back to our customers much faster than in previous years.
